Play to Your Strengths, Pick the Right Club

How to Lower My Golf Score, here are some tips from a fellow golfer on how to use what you are good at to lower my golf score:
The Problem: I found myself watching what others were doing and defaulting to using similar clubs. e.g driver off the tee, wood from the fairway. However, I was choosing clubs based on the norm and not clubs that I felt comfortable using.
The Outcome: As a consequence I was occasionally hitting awful shots off the tee, therefore finding the rough or the trees. This resulted in additional shots to find the fairway again. Similarly for shots from the fairway, or around the green. I was then getting into bunkers and taking even more shots. It's very frustrating!
Why do I need to focus on this: Playing to your strengths and picking clubs you like and can use helps reduce errors and get the results you want. My best round ever was with a five club challenge. I picked the five clubs that I felt most comfortable and achieved the what I thought the impossible.
Simple Tip: Firstly, don’t default to driver on every hole, use a club that gives you the best chance of hitting the fairway. On approach shots, choose a club you’re confident with, even if it leaves a longer putt. If you’re in trouble, use a wedge or 7-iron to get back in play rather than attempting a risky shot. Always assess the lie, wind, and hazards before committing. Above all, make decisions that suit your natural shot and avoid clubs or shots you’re uncomfortable with.
What Resources Helped me: I really struggled in three particular areas.
- Off the tee. I put my driver away, until I got some lessons to help me fix this, and used clubs I could hit and get to the fairway with.
- On the Fairway. I couldn't use a fairway wood and therefore really struggled often finding the trees or the rough. I bought myself a rescue wood. It was a revelation. It felt good, was very accurate and very forgiving. I could user this wood from anywhere. The best money I ever spend on golf. It's my go to club.
- Around the green. I really struggled to get on the green from within 100 yards. Previously I only had a pitching and sand wedge, as a result I was either too long or too short. The changing point was that my local golf pro let me try out some wedges. These helped provide me with a variety of different types of shot that helped breach the distances within 100 yards which makes up for the majority of shots in a round (apart from putting (well get onto that in my next blog)

Authors Note:
Have you been frustrated with your game lately, are you getting annoyed on the course and frustrated afterwards. You know you can play better than this.
Are you inconsistent, one hole you can hit the ball miles, then next hole its into the bushes barely 10 feet from the tee. Do you look envious at the others in you group thinking why can’t I do that, they make it look so easy.
Then I know how you feel and let me share some of my journey with you.
Hi I’m Rich and I’m happy to share my golf tips with you. I’m a bogey handicapper (That’s 18 for you who didn’t know). I took up golf not that long ago after a long absence to spend more time with my children and being Dads Taxi taking them from one activity to the next. I started back at 27, but after applying these tips I’m not down to 18.

TaylorMade Stealth Rescue
This rescue wood describes itself to the tee. You can hit it from the tee, the fairway and the rough. It has the weight and feel of an iron, but the shape of a wood. It has loft to get you out of the grass, and in my experience helps you stay out of trouble and also helps you get out of trouble. It's my favourite club in the bag and my goto. I can hit mine around 140-160 yards so a great piece of kit.
Benefits
- Stay out of trouble with its accuracy
- Get out of the rough with good loft
- Good distance
- Feels good to hit
- Helps reduce errors
- Overcome Anger and Frustration
2023 Cleveland RTX 6 Zipcore Tour Satin Wedge
I have the Cleveland Satin Wedges. I have the 52 and 56 degree wedges. This offers me something between my pitching wedge and my sand wedge so that I can hit the distances between, feeling more comfortable and able to take a full swing and get my ball on the green.
Benefits
- Gives you more options within 100 yards
- Gives you options on the types of shots you can take around the green such as pitch, chip, lob and bump and run. (now were getting into advanced stuff)
- Grooves that naturally adds spin to the ball so that it stops on the green, meaning less balls run through.
- Helps reduce errors
- Overcome Anger and Frustration
